Google Local Services Ads for roofers: what you pay for, and what your office still has to do
Google Local Services Ads charge a roofer per valid lead (a message, an answered call, a voicemail or a booking request), not per click. Published 2026 data puts roofing at about $55–$90 per lead, the most expensive trade tracked. Since August 2026 Google has been moving Local Services Ads into Performance Max campaigns with pay-per-lead goals, starting with US home services, roofing included. The lead is yours, but it still has to be answered and booked. For Houston roofers, Avantai Labs runs the ads in your account and books the estimates: https://www.avantailabs.com/home-services/roofing/houston
Local Services Ads are often the cheapest way for an eligible roofer to buy a lead it owns. A lead is not a booked estimate. The gap between the two is response time and qualification.
How a roofer gets more estimates out of Local Services Ads
- Check what Google requires for roofers in your account: background checks, insurance and any licenses that apply locally.
- Set the job types and service area you actually want. Replacement work in your zip codes, not everything with a roof on it.
- Answer every lead in under a minute, including messages and booking requests.
- Qualify before you book: ownership, address, replacement or repair, claim or retail.
- Track held estimates and signed jobs per lead, not just leads. That is the number to compare with other channels.
How Local Services Ads charge a roofer
- You pay per valid lead, not per click: a text or email, an answered call, a voicemail, or a booking request.
- Leads judged invalid or low quality are not charged.
- Charged leads can get credits automatically if Google later judges them low quality.
- Published 2026 data puts roofing leads at about $55–$90 each, the highest of the trades in that dataset.
What Google checks for roofers
- Business and owner background checks, for select users.
- General liability and professional liability insurance.
- State-level business and owner licenses where local law requires them.
- A 2025 Texas House bill analysis says Texas does not require a state-issued license for reroofing contractors. City registration and permit rules are separate: check your own city.
What changes with Performance Max in 2026
- Google is moving Local Services Ads into Performance Max campaigns with pay-per-lead goals.
- The first phase began in August 2026 for select US home-service advertisers. Roofing is on Google’s first-phase list.
- Broader groups follow in late 2026, according to the same page.
- Existing Local Services Ads campaigns are migrated automatically. Watch your account notices.
- Google’s page also describes a Google Verified badge for eligible businesses that pass registration and representative checks.
Local Services Ads or Google Search ads?
They are priced differently. Local Services Ads charge per lead; Search ads charge per click. A Search cost per lead, like LocaliQ’s $228.15 median for roofing and gutters, includes every click that never became a call or a form.
Most roofers who can run Local Services Ads should, and add Search where there is demand left over. The comparison that matters is cost per held estimate and per signed job, by channel.
What your office still has to do
- Answer every lead in under a minute. A lead you pay for and answer late is the most expensive kind.
- Qualify before booking, so estimators do not drive to renters or repair-only jobs you do not want.
- Book into real slots and send reminders, so estimates are held.
- Record what happened to each estimate: sold, lost or pending.
Where Avantai fits
Avantai sets up and runs pay-per-lead ads where you are eligible and Google Search where it makes sense, in your own account, then answers, qualifies and books every lead. For residential roofers in the Houston metro, Avantai runs this as a 60-day pilot on a flat monthly fee, then month to month. Ads run in your own account, and there is no volume guarantee. Questions contractors ask
How much do Local Services Ads cost for roofers?
Published 2026 data from 888 contractors puts roofing at about $55–$90 per lead, the most expensive trade in that dataset. Your cost depends on your area, your budget and how many roofers compete there.
Do I pay for bad leads on Local Services Ads?
Google says leads judged invalid or low quality are not charged, and that charged leads can get automatic credits if they are later judged low quality.
Do I need a license to run Local Services Ads as a roofer in Texas?
Google asks for state-level licenses only where local law requires them. A 2025 Texas House bill analysis says Texas does not require a state-issued license for reroofing contractors. Insurance and background checks still apply, and your city may have its own registration rules.
What is changing with Local Services Ads in 2026?
Google is moving them into Performance Max campaigns with pay-per-lead goals. The first phase started in August 2026 for select US home-service advertisers, roofing included, and existing campaigns are migrated automatically.
Are Local Services Ads enough on their own?
They give you leads you own. They do not answer, qualify or book them. Without a fast first contact, an expensive lead turns into a quote for someone else.
Does Avantai manage Local Services Ads?
For residential roofers in Houston, yes, in your own account, together with the first response, qualification and booking: https://www.avantailabs.com/home-services/roofing/houston
